Dog Training

Training

Dogs are smart creatures and also very playful. But it's important that even though they want to play a lot, you need to train them, too. Dogs that aren't trained can get spoiled.

Three common dog tricks are sit, down, and shake.

Down

Shake

A good first trick to teach your dog is sit. Here's how to teach your dog sit.

Step 1: Stand or kneel in front of your dog holding a treat a bit higher than their head.

Step 2: Slowly move the treat straight back towards your dog's tail. This should cause their nose to point up and their rear to drop. if their rear doesn't drop, keep moving the treat back. The instant their rear touches the floor, release the treat and mark the behavior by saying "good sit!"

Step 3: Another way to do this is to lightly push down behind the tail.

Some tricks may seem hard at first, like what the dog in the photo is doing, but eventually your dog will probably get it. Remember to be patient with your dog. Also, you should try not to yell at them when they get it wrong. They're still learning. What's even worse is yelling at your dog long after they do a bad thing. They won't remember what they did and will think doing whatever they're doing right when you yell at them is wrong.
